The Ladies knew that this final match was going to be tough, as unlike themselves AFC Liverpool were playing well in the league in the lead up to this fixture.
Winsford were ready for a fight and got stuck in from the first whistle. The whole team were up for it and it was a good job as the visitors were not going to be the push over that The Ladies beat at the beginning of the season 4 nil.
Both the back four of Rachel Robbins, Emma Johnson Hanna Hewitson, Leanne Hudson and the midfield of Kathryn Hulme, Kylie Kettle, Nicola Bogue, Danielle Lydiate and Jay Anderson all worked hard in breaking down the visitors attacking moves. It was a fierce battle by both teams to take control of play, but it was pretty much an even matched first half.
Unfortunately for Winsford it was the visitors that broke the deadlock, when an uncharacteristic mistake by the two centre backs resulted in the loose ball dropping perfectly for the Liverpool striker. The Winsford keeper, Jessica Moore came out to meet the ball, but the striker chipped the ball over Moore and into the back of the net.
The half time team talk with the management, was one of "We know where we are going wrong, we can beat them, we can do it." This seemed to reignite the fire in the Ladies and they came back out with a will to win. The management made a half time substitution and replaced Bogue with Sarah Lee and returned to the preferred 4, 4, 2 formation.
When the whistle blew for the second half Winsford piled on the pressure and pushed the visitors back into their own half and kept them there for most of the second half.
The Ladies threw everything at the Liverpool keeper, but she was on her game and easily dealt with what the Winsford strikers, Ashleigh Kerr and Lee had to offer.
Winsford didn't have it all there own way, as once or twice the visitors managed to break through the Ladies defence with some quick passing football, but the Winsford keeper, Moore was not going to let them score again and pulled off a couple of outstanding saves.
With only 2 minutes to go, Winsford put a final attack together and pushed for an equaliser. The visitors held a high back line hoping to catch Winsford offside. A piercing ball through the Liverpool defence was the luck that the ladies needed. The Liverpool keeper reached the ball first, which she stopped on the very edge of her 18-yard box, unfortunately her momentum took her beyond the stationary ball. Kerr who never gave up what was potentially a lost cause, collected the ball and from the tightest of angles slotted the ball home.
The ground erupted with cheers from the crowd as they knew what this equalising goal meant to the team. Just moments after the restart the final whistle went.
Winsford will now watch the rest of the results come in from the remaining outstanding games to see if they will hold on to 5th position and finish where they did last season.
