Winsford Ladies F.C. 6 - 3 Burnley F.C. Girls & Ladies (Cup Match Report)

The Ladies team beat Burnley F.C. Girls & Ladies 6 - 3 after
Extra Time and Penalties.

The Ladies squad for Sunday, was made up of the following:
Jessica Moore in nets.
The Defence was Rachel Stockall, Emma Johnson, Leanne Hudson
and Kathryn Hulme.
The Mid-field was Anna Watt, Kylie Kettle, Sarah Lee, Danielle Lydiate
and Hanna Hewitson.
And Winsford's striker was Amy Hughes.
Substitute's were : Nicky Cook, Jodie Ventre and Jay Anderson.

Winsford scored first when Kettle put through a cracking ball
for Hewitson, who ran into the 18-yard box from the right wing
and struck the ball beauifully, beating the Burnley keeper.

The visitors struck back almost immediately to bring the game
to 1 - 1 just before half time, with a long range strike.

Then Winsford scored their second goal from a corner, just
after the second half kicked off.  It was Hewitson's turn to
return the favour, as she took the corner kick and delivered
the perfect ball for Kettle to run onto, which Kettle just side
footed in, leaving the Burnley keeper rooted to the spot.

Unfortunatley, just before the end of the game, Burnley's
fortunes changed, when Winsford scored an own goal

The match ended 2 - 2 after 90 minutes and so the game went
into extra time

Burnley struck first, scoring in the first half or Extra
Time.

However, Winsford weren't finished and pressed for the equaliser,
which they scored from a well worked set piece.  The Ladies won
themselves a free kick just on the edge of the Burnley 18-yard box.
Both Lydiate and Hewitson stood waiting to take it and when the
whistle blew, they both ran for the ball.  The dummy run by
Lydiate completely fooled the defensive wall, as they separated
to cover Lydiate's run, which allowed Hewitson to strike the ball
and drive it through the gap and into the back of the net via the
near post.

The match ended 3 - 3 after 30 minutes of Extra Time and so
the game went into Penalties.

The management asked for volunteers to take the penalties, as
they wanted to make sure the players were happy and confident to
take them.

Hulme steps up to take the first penalty and scored, driving the
ball straight into the top right hand corner, just under the cross bar.

Moore saves the first Burnley penalty, diving full stretch to her
right.  What a great save.  The rest of the team go wild!!

Lee steps up and takes the second penalty for Winsford and scores,
placing the ball hard and low to the keepers right.

Moore saves the second Burnley penalty, diving full stretch to her
right again.  Another great save.  The whole ground cheers on the
Ladies team.

Hughes steps up and takes the third penalty for Winsford and scores,
placing the ball again, hard and low to the keepers right.

The Burnley keeper steps up to take their third penalty to keep
them in the cup tie, but blasts the ball against the cross bar and
out of play.  The whole ground erupts with cheers and all the team
run to their keeper, jumping and diving on her in celebration.

Winsford Ladies win 3 - 0 on Penalties.  What a fantastic victory!!

The Ladies team definitely deserved the win today.  During the
pre-match team talk, several of the Winsford players clearly over
heard the Burnley players during the pre-match warm up, stating
that the game would be an easy win for them and that they should
beat Winsford in double figures?  Unfortunately, this is not the
way it turned out, as the visitors did not have the game all their
own way and the Ladies gave as good as, if not better than they got.

We will let the result speak for itself!!

Winsford's Girl of the Match Award went to Hanna Hewitson.
Well done from all the team and management.

However, a very BIG WELL DONE goes out to every single player, as
it was undoubtedly Winsford's best performance so far this season,
individually and collectively.  The Winsford back four were solid and
played as a unit, catching the Burnley strike force offside no less
than 25 times during the game.  The midfield worked tirelessly to cut
out the Burnley attacks and to support both the back four and Hughes,
their lone striker.  And lets not forget the performance by Jessica
Moore in nets, as it will definitely go down in Winsford's history as
"the" greatest goal keeping performance.  So far that is.
