Winsford Ladies F.C. 2 - 0 AFC Urmston Meadowside (League Match 11th Sept 2011)

The Ladies squad for Sunday, was made up of the following:
Hanna Hewitson in nets.
The Defence was Rachel Stockall, Emma Johnson, Kathryn Hulme
and Jodie Venture.
The Mid-field was Kylie Kettle, Sarah Lee and Danielle Lydiate.
And Winsford's striker's were Nicky Cook, Amy Hughs and Anna Watt.
Substitute's were : Chloe Grierson, Kerry Henstock and Jay Anderson.

The Ladies won the toss and chose to take the kick-off.
When the whistle went Winsford were straight at the visitors
and pushed Urmston back into their own half and for the first
20 mins and weren't given any opportunity to put a decent
attack together.

Winsford were definitely up for today's match and that was
evident from the effort that each and every player was putting
in.  It was relentless.  The Ladies confidence was flying high.

The Ladies created several opportunities in an attempt to
open the scoring, working hard to get themselves into the right
position, but the it was the final ball that let them down.
Chance after chance went begging, but they didn't lose heart or
give up.

The visitors pressed forward trying to break down the Winsford
defence, who were in top form.  So much so, Urmston were having
to take shots from distance, which went either wide of the mark,
or Hewitson dealt with confidently.  This left Urmston exposed to
counter attack, which Winsford exploited numerous times.

It was from one of these long range shots that lead to Winsford
scoring the opening goal of the game.  Hewitson, with her first
kick out of her hands of the game, sent a long kick that landed
deep into the Urmston half.  The visitors defence misjudged the
bounce of the ball and it bounced over their heads.  It was then
a scramble to get the ball cleared before Winsford's strikers
pounced.  The Ladies won a corner and Lydiate delivered a perfect
cross into the 18 yard box. The ball flew over the top of everyone's
head and as it came down on the otherside of the far post Kettle
met it mid-flight and scored with a beautifully taken side footed
volley.

Winsford Ladies F.C.  1  -  0  AFC Urmston Meadowside

The goal spurred the Ladies Team into action and they
redoubled their efforts.  But so did Urmston and it was the
visitors that took the upper hand for the remainder of the
first half.

The visitors managed one decent attack into the Winsford half
during the first half, which came down Winsford's right wing.
The Urmston winger managed to get a testing shot off at goal,
but Hewitson had it covered, making a good save.  Hewitson dropped
quickly to her right and got enough on the ball to push it onto
the post.

Half time.  Winsford Ladies F.C.  1  -  0  AFC Urmston Meadowside

The management took the half time break, as an opportunity
to refocus the Ladies efforts.  It was clear to all that Winsford
were the better team on the day and that they could win the match
easily, but only if they concentrated more on their first touch
and their passing in the second half.  If they didn't, the game
was also theirs to lose.

The second half kicked off and Urmston didn't know what
hit them as Winsford put them under immediate pressure, giving
them no time on the ball.  This sustained pressure caused
the visitors to make mistakes, which the Ladies capitalised on.

Winsford kept the pressure up and each time they had possession,
the Ladies pressed forward into the Urmston half.  And it wasn't
long before their efforts were rewarded with a second goal.

The Ladies were playing some very nice passing football and
looked more and more confident as the match went on.  It was from
one of Winsford's foray's that Cook scored an easy tap in,
following some lovely football by Hughes and then a lovely
unselfish pass squared across the Urmston 18-yard box.

Winsford Ladies F.C.  2  -  0  AFC Urmston Meadowside

The management made their first change of the afternoon
when they substituted Venture for Grierson with 20 minutes to
go. This change meant a small adjustment to the player positions,
so Watt moved to Right Back and Grierson replaced her on the
Right Wing.

The Ladies continued to keep the pressure on the visitors,
creating several chances which were squandered following a
poor final pass.

Winsford's second substitution was a straight swap.  Anderson
came on at Right Back for Watt.

Urmston tried their best to come back at Winsford, but by
this time the Ladies had the measure of them and closed down
the visitors as soon as they tried to move deep into the
Winsford half.

With 10 minutes to go, the Ladies final change for the afternoon
was again a straight swap, when Henstock came on for Cook up front.

Winsford came close to scoring on a couple more occassions,
but couldn't put it away.  Hewitson in nets, was a spectator
for long periods in the game and for most of the second half.
The Ladies played some lovely passing football at times and
made it very difficult for the visitors to get any rest between
attacks.

The final score was 2  -  0  to Winsford Ladies F.C.  This is
what the Ladies have been waiting for, have needed and have certainly
deserved.  Winsford put in a gutsy, determined and very confident
performance against Urmston, who left Barton Stadium with nothing
but a stunned, shocked look on their faces.

Winsford's next match is away against Macclesfield Town
Ladies, on Sunday, 18th September 2011.  Kick-Off 2.00pm.

Well done to Kylie Kettle, who was given Winsford's Girl
